What are you looking for when you promote someone into a leadership position?

When Suzy Welsh asked this question she wasn’t expecting the answer she received from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

Jeff Bezos doesn’t look for the expected characteristics; intelligence, motivational skills, strategic vision or how smart someone is. He wants to see a long track record of hard decisions that ended up being right.

He says, “The most successful people aren't necessarily the ones who are the quickest thinkers or the most well-read. They're the ones who focus on delivering the best results and making the tough calls that turn out to be right in the end.”

This may not be immediately obvious, but the successful people in business have got to the top by making the right decisions.  So are you right or are you smart?
